Michigan Makes History with First-Ever Major Taylor Day
Michigan has made history as the first state in the nation to honor cycling legend Marshall Walter “Major” Taylor, with Governor Gretchen Whitmer proclaiming September 15 as “Major Taylor Day.” Thanks to dedicated advocacy by Major Taylor Michigan Cycling Advocacy (MTMCA), led by Founder & Executive Director Marco Speeks, this proclamation recognizes the first Black world champion cyclist and civil rights pioneer who broke barriers and set world records despite facing severe racial discrimination. His legacy of perseverance and excellence continues to inspire Michigan’s cycling community and the ongoing fight for equity.
